• Wouldn't field and general officers have removed rank insignia from their helmets, when near the enemy?

    In The Longest Day (1962), while they stormed the beaches, field officers were wearing helmets that clearly exhibited their rank insignia! Isn't it foolhardy to unnecessarily expose your rank insignia to the enemy?
    Aren't they foolishly beckoning enemy snipers to target them? Even if friendlies and subordinates don't recognize their field officers, they can straightforwardly their superiors' identity. The more senior the rank, the fewer the positions.
    So the identity of field and general officers can't be faked as effortlessly, and a junior officer can more effortlessly verify a field or...
